For the past 25 years, GLOWA has successfully implemented the following major projects with support from the aforementioned stakeholders/actors:

1. GLOWA-OXFAM ENOUGH! PROJECT: GLOWA was one of the CSOs that implemented a 4-year project (2019 – 2023) titled “Enough! Taking Positive Action to End Sexual & Gender Based Violence in Ghana, Liberia and Mali”. The project goal was to create enabling environment for girls and women to know, claim and exercise their rights to end sexual and gender-based violence in Ghana, Liberia and Mali. GLOWA implemented an aspect of the project in La Nkwantanang Madina and Kpone Katamanso municipalities (Greater Accra Region) with funding support from EU through Oxfam & WiLDAF led consortium. GLOWA worked in ten (10) project beneficiary communities and also collaborated with MMDAs, DOVVSU, GHS, GES, MoGCSP, DSWCD, community structures including traditional authorities (Chiefs and Queenmothers), women including females with disabilities who are more vulnerable to sexual abuse.

  • Women and Girls actively participating in policy reforms and Decision-Making Processes in their communities and districts.
  • 18 trained Legal Literacy Volunteers (LLVs) are acting as agents of change, sensitizing communities on SGBV, identifying and rescuing survivors of violence in their respective communities.
  • 10 empowered communities are using their Community Advocacy Action Plans to monitor and stop violence against women and girls. Community leaders are reporting perpetrators of violence to the appropriate authorities DOVVSU, DSWCD, CHRAJ through the trained LLVs.
  • Queen mothers are rescuing and providing temporary shelter to survivors of violence in the 10 communities.
  • 9 vibrant Women’s groups formed and operational in the beneficiary communities and their capacities enhanced in leadership skills, group dynamism and supported with logistics to enhance their group meetings especially, with record keeping.
  • 6 Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) Clubs involving both in-school and out-school girls and boys formed and functioning in the project school communities. The empowered boys and girls are now assertive and taking informed decisions and actions on protecting their rights (avoiding forced marriage, teenage pregnancy and ensuring their retention in school).
  • Gender equitable social norms, attitudes and behaviours are adopted and sustained at the family, community, relationship and individual level in the 10 project beneficiary communities.

2. Ghana Somubi Dwumadie (GSD) Programme (Evidence and Effectiveness grant): GLOWA in partnership with Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) and Queen Mothers’ Association recently implemented an Option led-consortium project dubbed “Stop Discriminating Against Persons with Disability and Mental Health Disability” from 2021 – 2022 with funding support from UKAID from the UK government. The beneficiary districts are South Dayi (Volta) and Biakoye (Oti) districts.

  • The project increased awareness among over 15,000 citizens and community members on the Disability and Mental Health Acts and their responsibilities. They are taking informed decisions and actions in terms of attitude and behavior change.
  • 391 Empowered Persons with Disability (PWDs) including persons with mental health disabilities (PWMHD) and their caregivers are engaging duty bearers (MMDAs, Health and Education Service Providers) to claim their rights.
  • As a result of the frequent engagements with both District Assemblies and the PWD Rights Holders, the new DCE for Biakoye District Assembly distributed wheel chairs, deep freezers and other items to PWDs from the 3% Disability Fund based on the PWDs’ development needs request.
  • Before the project intervention, the Assembly was not utilizing the fund for its intended purpose. Borrowing from the fund for other purposes without replacing was an issue. However, through the project intervention, the Fund is now being used for its intended purpose as stated in the NCPD guidelines.
  • On the part of the duty bearers, there is improved responsiveness in the provision of quality services and information sharing to PWDs and PWMHDs.
  • Improved mental health care services in the 2 beneficiary districts
  • The PWDs and caregivers of PWMHD beneficiaries have testified that healthcare service providers in the 2 beneficiary districts now display positive attitude and non-discriminative behaviors towards them when they access health care.
  • Our advocacy engagements have contributed to mental health services now being covered by National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
  • This project resulted in a video documentary in which GLOWA’s most significant change stories were captured (https://www.youtube.com/@ghanasomubi).

3. GLOWA STAR-GHANA ANTI-CORRUPTION PROJECT: UKaid STAR-Ghana funded Anti-corruption project (2018 – 2020) dubbed ‘Persons with Disabilities in focus: Where is our 3% disability fund’. GLOWA and partners (GSPD and Volta Queenmothers Association and Volta Star Radio) joined forces and implemented this project in Krachi East, Kadjebi (Oti) and Akatsi South (Volta) districts. The project primarily targeted and benefited females with disabilities and PWDs located in 30 hard-to-reach communities.

  • The project mobilized and empowered 872 persons with disabilities and their caregivers (619 females and 253 males) on their rights and how to engage the duty bearers and access the 3% disability Fund from the MMDAs.
  • Community and state duty bearers in the 3 districts engaged have become very responsive and supportive in their services and judgement.
  • The 3 Assemblies have stopped borrowing from the Fund without paying back as we named them
  • Women Self Help Groups (wSHG) and other PWDs were linked-up to access credible and adequate information on disbursement and management of the 3% Disability Fund.
  • The Disability Fund Management Committees in the 3 beneficiary District Assemblies complied strictly with the NCPD Guidelines in the utilization and disbursement of the Fund.
  • 136 of the wSHG members (77 women 59 men,) from hard-to-reach communities actually benefitted from the Disability Common Fund through the project intervention.

4. GLOWA- ACTIONAID-GHANA POWER PROJECT: GLOWA was one of the 8 WROs who worked with ActionAid Ghana (AAG) on this project dubbed “Promoting Opportunities for Women Empowerment and Rights” (POWER) with funding support from Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2016 to 2020. The project focused on 3 results areas:

1) Promoting Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agricultural and adaptation Practices;
2) Increasing awareness on Unpaid Care work (UCW) of women and girls in the households and
3) Ending Violence against women and girls in the communities in 8 districts in Ghana. GLOWA in partnership with AAG empowered 25 communities in Adaklu district (Volta Region).

The project raised awareness, mobilized and organized rural women to claim their rights as smallholder farmers and caregivers.

  • Our Gender-Responsive Model Families’ (GRMF) concept now made Men and boys engage in Unpaid Care work (UCW) leading to recognition of overloads of women and girls in the families, redistribution and reduction of UCW loads which also enabled women to gain time to engage in economic activities to supplement family income.
  • Family resources are shared equitably for the benefit of all family members including women and girls.
  • Women had access to productive lands being used for farming
  • 425 well-informed and empowered girls are leading their own advocacy campaigns to end sexual abuse, forced marriage and other discrimination and denial of education in their communities.
  • 25 Women Farmer Groups formed and operational in 25 project beneficiary communities and they are engaged in group farming employing Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agricultural Practices and other income generating ventures supplementing family incomes.
  • One of the most vibrant groups Aziedukope Women in Gari production and supplies is well organized and now serving as a strategic CBO-partner to GLOWA.
  • The project contributed to producing 2 women who emerged as Assembly members and 10 are Unit Committee members
  • Reduction in GBV cases as a result of activities of Community Based Anti-Violence Team (COMBAT) in project beneficiary communities and district.
  • The District Assembly put up a Day care center for the women and the project supplied Tricycles, energy-saving coal pot, water-harvesting tanks, seedlings, poultry birds, hybrid animals for rearing and other equipment for 9 communities based on their needs. This has increased the income and wellbeing of 235 women in Adaklu district.
  • Relationship between the District Assembly and the communities have improved as there is constant engagements and accountability.

5. Ghana’s Strengthening Accountability Mechanism (GSAM) Activity: funded by USAID through CARE International. GLOWA was a CSO implementing partner for 8 years (2015-2022). The project aim was to improve accountability, transparency and performance at the local government level by strengthening the government and citizens’ oversight of capital projects in 100 districts across 10 regions of Ghana. The project had 2 components, the first component focused on public information campaigns aimed at disseminating results of Performance Audit conducted by Ghana Audit Service (GAS) on 50 District Assemblies. It assessed project planning, initiation, execution and benefit. The second component focused on Social Accountability (SA) in 50 other Districts. GLOWA worked effectively in 7 of these districts in Volta and Oti (4 GAS and 3 SA Districts) for the 8 years. GLOWA in collaboration with the GAS held Town Halls which benefited district and community stakeholders. We also disseminated such results in 100 communities in the 4 GAS districts (North Dayi, Krachi West, Krachi Nchumuru and Kadjebi). In the 3 SA districts, (Ho West, Nkwanta South & Krachi East) GLOWA mobilized Community Development Monitors (CDMs), and other community-based volunteers including women and monitored a total of 25 capital projects in 3 districts. On this project,

  • GLOWA mobilized 1,500 women and other citizens to engage in the social accountability processes and enabled them have accessible credible information on public capital projects and other social services delivered with the DA Common Fund and other public funds.
  • The 25 monitored projects were delivered with quality and per standards
  • Performance updates were also disseminated in 150 communities
  • The empowered Women participated in local governance processes through Community Interfaces, Townhalls and they were able to use the Citizens scorecards and scored the duty bearers’ community projects such as classroom blocks, clinics, CHPS compounds and roads linking to market centers.
  • They also assessed quality of service delivered for their benefits.
  • As a result of CDMs’ regular monitoring, all 25 capital projects executed by the beneficiary districts resulted in quality projects benefiting the communities including women.
  • The mounted bill boards on performances of the SA districts led to increased availability of citizen-generated information on MMDAs’ capital projects and citizens’ engagement put the DA officials on their toes to provide quality services for public goods and services.

6. Women Voice and Leadership COVID-19 Flexible Response Funding Mechanism Project: with funding support from Global Affairs Canada through Plan International Ghana led Consortium. It was implemented in 5 communities in Adaklu district (2020 – 2021). The empowered girls are more assertive and confident in expressing their views and rejecting any form of VAWG. This project provided some livelihood support to the women as they were trained in various income generation ventures.

7. Action for Voice Influence and Inclusive Development (AVID) Project: This project is titled “We Matter! Empowering Rural Women and PWD constituents to take positive actions to participate actively in local governance processes for improved livelihood.” It is funded by William and Flora Hewlett Foundation through STAR Ghana Foundation. The AVID project currently being implemented in Ho Municipality and Adaklu district is aimed at empowering target women smallholder farmers, market women, PWDs and youth to be independent economically and increase their voice to be able to engage in leadership and decision-making spaces within their localities.

  • Of the 8 women empowered to contest the 2023 district-level elections, 6 were elected as members of their respective Assemblies.
  • Four landowners signed agreements granting access to arable land for 204 beneficiary women, including youth, in Sokode Ando, Adaklu Tsrefe, Goefe, and Takla Gborgame. These women have since started vegetable, groundnut, and beans farming.
  • The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of Ho Metropolitan Assembly updated its Disability Database during a community interface meeting at Takla Gborgame on October 30, 2023, in collaboration with GLOWA. A total of 29 PWDs (17 males and 12 females) were captured in the database.
  • Out of 30 PWDs who benefited from the Fund, 8 from GLOWA project communities/electoral areas successfully accessed it, enhancing their livelihoods. Madam Asempa Delali, a beneficiary from Adaklu Goefe, received support from the Disability Fund, which included a provision kiosk and a cash grant.
  • Four (4) nominated PWDs from Ando and Takla communities have been shortlisted for the next round of the Disability Fund, with the Metropolitan Assembly reaching out to confirm their priority needs.
