A Community Rises for Inclusion – Tapa Amanya, Biakoye District

A community-driven effort in Tapa Amanya in the Biakoye District of the Oti region has transformed its community library from an exclusive space to a beacon of inclusion, proving that collective action can eliminate barriers. The project, under the Ghana Somubi Dwumadie initiative, successfully mobilized local residents to build an accessibility ramp at the entrance of the community library, ensuring that persons with disabilities can access and fully participate in community life.

This impactful change began with the “STOP Discriminating Against Persons with Disabilities and Mental Health Disabilities” activity, an initiative by GLOWA and sponsored by UKAID. For years, the community library, a symbol of knowledge and progress, was physically inaccessible to persons with disabilities. The building lacked disability access route, an indication that these community members were often overlooked in planning and excluded from community support services.

Through a series of sensitization activities, the community was awakened to the need for change.  Community Watch Advocates took the lead, inspiring residents to rally together and raise funds for the renovation of the library. Their advocacy paid off as the community’s traditional and opinion leaders agreed to the initiative. The newly constructed ramp is not just a structure; it is a symbol of a community that has embraced inclusivity. As Martin Amponsah, the chairperson for the Ghana Federation for the Disabled in the Biakoye District, shared, “The ramp constructed has been very helpful… everybody can now access the library.

This success has become a catalyst for further change. The community, empowered by this achievement, has now embarked on a new self-help project to build a community clinic. The story of the Tapa Amanya library demonstrates the transformative power of awareness and social action, showing that when citizens are empowered, they can work together to create a more equitable and supportive environment for all.
