In a powerful demonstration of compassion and the far-reaching impact of media advocacy, a radio appeal has led to the donation of a sewing machine to a tailor with a disability. This act of kindness, which has enabled Mr. Adamu Mohammed to establish his own business, highlights the success of the Ghana Somubi Dwumadie project in empowering individuals and fostering community support.

The story began with a radio program organized by GLOWA as part of its “STOP Discriminating Against Persons with Disabilities and Mental Health Disabilities” activity, sponsored by UKAID. Mr. Adamu, a physically challenged tailor from Bowiri Kwamekrom, used the platform to appeal for a sewing machine to start his business. His heartfelt plea reached Miss Happy, a listener from Alavanyo Vudidi, who was moved to action and donated the sewing machine within a week to Mr. Adamu.
Mr. Adamu’s life has been transformed by this support. The sewing machine has not only enabled him to practice his trade but also to generate a sustainable income to support his family. “With the sewing machine, I’m able to sew and generate income from which I invested some into my farming,” Mr. Mohammed testified, highlighting the ripple effect of the donation. The Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Jones Mawulikplimi, also noted that the donation has inspired other persons with disabilities in the community.
This story stands as a testament to the power of a single act of kindness and the crucial role of projects like Ghana Somubi Dwumadie in creating platforms that connect needs with resources. It is a beacon of hope, showing that with the right support, persons with disabilities can achieve self-reliance and build a brighter future.
